They provide sustainable fashion from Cardiff to Edinburgh.

Tom Walker, 35, founder of the company, said: “Sustainability’s definitely important. It’s amazing, sort of, the amount of clothes there are in the world.

“You tend to notice with the fast fashion side of things, that items aren’t as well-made; the more modern stuff won’t last.”

Their merchandise is sourced worldwide, purchasing different goods from different regions based on quality.

Mr Walker described the process as ‘a bit of trial and error’.

Headlock’s website describes their frequent events as having ‘great stock every time and always great deals’. With Sheffield consistently being named as an affordable city for the students, the event was a success.

One student, Isla Wilson-Boult said: “I love thrifting because you get to find all the items that other people have discarded and you get to get more wear out of them.”

The company’s belief in sustainability goes further than values, with any items that are ‘too modern’ being donated to a charity for the homeless based in York.

Mr Walker said: “We buy big quantities of items, sort through them and sell bits online, bits in-person. Then with items that are too modern, we donate to a homeless charity based in York.

“We have no waste, none of the clothes we get go in the bin.”

The business sprouted from Tom Walker’s interest in fashion – he would stay with his friends who were at university and sell clothing in different cities.

He went on to host his first festival stall at Kendal Calling in 2011. In 2012, they had their first collaboration with an SU in Leeds, followed by Nottingham Trent and Durham.

Miss Wilson-Boult said: “I think the fast fashion industry is quite toxic in a few ways.

“The material isn’t good, it’s not sustainable, and there’s so many people that are exploited.”

People can go to headlock.co to look for their upcoming events and order online to ‘invent their own style’.

Thousands of second-hand goods were sold to Sheffield students last Monday by a vintage clothing business.
