Students in Sheffield have shared mixed reactions following the progress made by Reform UK in the city\u2019s local elections, with many questioning what the results could mean for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Elections for seats on Sheffield City Council took place on Thursday, with Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green and Reform UK candidates contesting wards across the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Labours Sheffield Councillor Tom Hunt has lost his seat to the Green Party which made significant gains in the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But it was Reform that came out top picking up 12 seats on the council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students at the University of Sheffield have said that issues such as public transport and the cost of living were some of their biggest concerns following the election results.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One first year University of Sheffield student, Bertie Cassell, 19, said: \u2018\u2019I would like the council to improve the public transport to make it more regular and easier to access places like the city centre or the peaks.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For university students who rely heavily on buses and trains, Reform UK has taken a limited approach to fix public transport, focusing instead on improving existing infrastructure and prioritising road improvements rather than major new rail investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Cassell went on to say that the cost of living and food vulnerability is one of his main concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said: ”Lots of students are living on really tight budgets, sacrificing good healthy meals just to get through the year.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reform UK has pledged to remove interest on student loans, although the party has not outlined major changes to tuition fees or wider student finance support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another student, Chloe Sharp, 20, has also expressed a need for improved transport as well as the problems with the cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She said: ”A lot of students are struggling financially at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
”I think people are worried about what political changes could mean for students and whether our concerns will still be listened to, which is why more student voices are needed within the community.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reform UK’s policies suggest university students would see fewer changes to tuition fees and maintenance support compared to other parties.
