{"id":61354,"date":"2026-05-08T15:22:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T15:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=61354"},"modified":"2026-05-08T15:22:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T15:22:23","slug":"sheffield-local-election-results-raise-questions-over-student-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/08\/sheffield-local-election-results-raise-questions-over-student-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield local election results raise questions over student issues\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Students in Sheffield have shared mixed reactions following the progress made by Reform UK in the city\u2019s local elections, with many questioning what the results could mean for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elections for seats on Sheffield City Council took place on Thursday, with Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green and Reform UK candidates contesting wards across the city.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labours Sheffield Councillor Tom Hunt has lost his seat to the Green Party which made significant gains in the city. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it was Reform that came out top picking up 12 seats on the council. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students at the University of Sheffield have said that issues such as public transport and the cost of living were some of their biggest concerns following the election results.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One first year University of Sheffield student, Bertie Cassell, 19, said: \u2018\u2019I would like the council to improve the public transport to make it more regular and easier to access places like the city centre or the peaks.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For university students who rely heavily on buses and trains, Reform UK has taken a limited approach to fix public transport, focusing instead on improving existing infrastructure and prioritising road improvements rather than major new rail investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Cassell went on to say that the cost of living and food vulnerability is one of his main concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: &#8221;Lots of students are living on really tight budgets, sacrificing good healthy meals just to get through the year.&#8221;
