{"id":61411,"date":"2026-05-11T13:51:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:51:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=61411"},"modified":"2026-05-11T13:51:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T13:51:32","slug":"from-canvas-to-kilns-stepping-inside-the-studios-of-sheffield-artists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/11\/from-canvas-to-kilns-stepping-inside-the-studios-of-sheffield-artists\/","title":{"rendered":"From canvas to kilns: Stepping inside the studios of Sheffield artists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ab559488e19b742312f35a0d9fdee669\">Over 140 artists and makers across Sheffield and the surrounding areas opened up their homes, studios, galleries and workshops for free across five days.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2e9d0f4ed0a68f66693670712dc15fc8\">From May 2 to 4 and May 9 to 10, 144 artists and 83 venues were opened up for artists and makers to display their work, answer questions and sell their creations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e850398cc63626467b859f2d412a70f2\">Abstract artist, Kate Bevan, 38, opened up her Endcliffe studio showing off her unique and colourful work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4142c65ce59388859d8735b08316456e\">She said: \u201cIts really nice to be able to sell to people directly. Galleries usually charge 40 per cent commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c1754da02f4fef8548d690665489fbb7\">\u201cYou get to meet everybody and a lot of people don\u2019t know about it, so people in passing are taking a flyer or booklet and getting to explore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_1790-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61414\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500142393347383;width:308px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kate Bevan&#8217;s studio in Endcliffe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3cce5ea289c718f93b02cdc62540a47c\">Open Up Sheffield is one of the largest events of its kind in the UK outside of London and has been celebrating art and textiles for 28 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d94ca784b94b8bd0ab472cc0dec74450\">Artists and makers included sculptor Karin Hessenberg, who has been recently elected into The Society of Portrait Sculptors, and Mo Laycock OBE, who is a painter and textile artist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ae31931d5b29f641547ceff65ad1d9cd\">A large range of art was displayed including sculptures, abstract paintings, ceramics, photography, textiles and jewellery, as well as specialised crafts, including woodwork and metalwork.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ef2649be1a298ac426c408a7713f3313\">Open Up Sheffield is a non-profit organisation, with its sponsors being Sheffield City Council and Rivelin Co.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5a2601b702f141ef2d952b5c94ef90b6\">A spokesperson from Rivelin Co said: \u201cOpen Up is a brilliant opportunity for artists to connect and share their process, and also invites Sheffield\u2019s communities to discover the vibrant art being made on their doorstep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9b56b253f6663143724c39f8ae278789\">The venues were stationed all across the Sheffield area, from Hathersage and the Hope Valley to Barnsley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-13e7309484138619f7e1bd81cb6f55c9\">Several studios were set up around Fulwood and Crookes, predominantly student areas, which worked as a great opportunity for a wholesome day out to observe artwork and get involved in the Sheffield community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1a6734712a136548cbd476151c435913\">Hannah Wilson, 18, a law student at the University of Sheffield, said: \u201cI came across Open Up Sheffield on Instagram and I thought it would be a lovely day out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-750c88a35ec29e7e39bbc56633a9a603\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of work being displayed, and it&#8217;s been a great opportunity to see the art of Sheffield, and observe different types of artwork and talk to the artists in their studios, while also exploring the city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-62542390c8fcf04c8ced81b01fbda2a6\">For more information, click here: <a
