{"id":61592,"date":"2026-05-14T10:07:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T10:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=61592"},"modified":"2026-05-14T10:36:01","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T10:36:01","slug":"sheffield-students-question-university-ai-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/14\/sheffield-students-question-university-ai-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield students question University AI rules"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A University of Sheffield lecturer has defended the use of AI in education, after some students suggested they were unwilling to use it during their studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The university has chosen not to ignore AI and embrace it as a helpful tool in assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On its website, the institution sets out recently updated <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffield.ac.uk\/our-education\/ai-principles\">principles on generative AI<\/a>, referring to a &#8220;positive approach&#8221; to the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also promises to support staff and students in &#8220;understanding the limitations and challenges of using such tools, and enable staff and students to use GenAI tools appropriately, responsibly and ethically.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student awareness of these principles has risen as they begins to near deadlines for end of year assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Millie Longman, 19, undergraduate student said: &#8220;I appreciate why the university are learning to work with this and educate students on the best way to use AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;However, I think the university should be emphasising the importance of being able to come up with your own ideas without relying on AI.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Kerin, 19, undergraduate student said: &#8220;I don&#8217;t agree with it. I think it&#8217;s unnecessary and it isn&#8217;t fair to students who don&#8217;t use AI for their work.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added she had concerns about the environmental impact of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Emma Heywood, a lecturer in the university&#8217;s Information, Journalism and Communication department, said: &#8220;It&#8217;s a bit short-sighted to never use AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In about two years time, you&#8217;ll be behind the curve, it&#8217;ll be like people who never started using the internet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ab6da275-7ed9-499f-9404-56c3e23a9407-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ab6da275-7ed9-499f-9404-56c3e23a9407-980x551.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ab6da275-7ed9-499f-9404-56c3e23a9407-480x270.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Heywood added: &#8220;I think it will extend the amount of research you&#8217;ll be able to do.
