{"id":61841,"date":"2026-05-20T09:28:46","date_gmt":"2026-05-20T09:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=61841"},"modified":"2026-05-20T09:28:51","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T09:28:51","slug":"27-years-of-magic-airy-fairy-celebrates-nearly-three-decades-of-community-on-london-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/20\/27-years-of-magic-airy-fairy-celebrates-nearly-three-decades-of-community-on-london-road\/","title":{"rendered":"27 Years of Magic: Airy Fairy Celebrates Nearly Three Decades of Community on London Road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Airy Fairy, a spiritual shop on London Road, celebrated 27 years on the independent scene this month, demonstrating the importance of contact within Sheffield&#8217;s pagan community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anwen Fryer-Burrows, a single mother, opened the shop in May 1999 with the help of a grant and a start-up loan from The Prince\u2019s Trust, now known as The King\u2019s Trust, who aims to help 11-30 year olds transform their lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial funds were invested into basics such as carpets, paint, tradesmen and to pay for a boiler and a second loan was taken to expand the back cafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Fryer-Burrows said: &#8220;I&#8217;ve ridden out the rough times. It is really hard work and I think a lot of people open up a business not knowing how much work it will be. You&#8217;ve got to really keep at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_1071-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61845\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While the shop first sold art by local artists, they then began to offer reiki and yoga, Ms Fryer-Burrows said: \u201cit really has just grown organically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have only started selling things as I&#8217;ve known enough about them, I&#8217;ve never sold anything I don&#8217;t really know anything about as otherwise I can\u2019t advice people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About eight months after opening, the local coordinator of The Pagan Federation began using the space once a fortnight for meetings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the talks progressed the pagan community became deeply incorporated into the shop with the introduction of tarot cards and ethically sourced and fair trade herbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_1070-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61846\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah George ,61, an Airy Fairy customer said: \u201cI think paganism is the closest belief system I can attach myself to, I have an appreciation and deep respect for mother earth and the moon cycle and the community brings people together with similar values to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the shop first opened the demographic of customers was largely between the ages of 30-50, but with the growth of social media groups such as \u2018Witches of Instagram\u2019 and \u2018Witchtok\u2019 Sheffield\u2019s pagan community has grown to incorporate much younger enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Fryer-Burrows said: \u201cI just love it so much and feel a responsibility for the community I&#8217;ve created here.
