{"id":67,"date":"2024-03-13T09:36:41","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T09:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=67"},"modified":"2024-03-13T17:00:24","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T17:00:24","slug":"miners-strike-40th-anniversary-told-by-those-involved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/13\/miners-strike-40th-anniversary-told-by-those-involved\/","title":{"rendered":"Miners\u2019 strike 40th anniversary: Stories told by those involved\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The call for a nation-wide miners\u2019 walkout, which contributed to the 1984-85 Miners\u2019 strike, has reached its 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bitesize\/articles\/zv8gdnb\"> today<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The year long strike took place after Margaret Thatcher\u2019s Conservative government planned the closure of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-68244762\"> 20 coal pits, which saw \u00be of the mining community walk out<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Despite the Miners\u2019 year-long protests, the government eventually closed all mining pits<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/uk-35137222\"> in 2015.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chris Kitchen, the General Secretary of the National Union of Miners\u2019 and Secretary of National Union of Miners\u2019 Yorkshire Area, said: \u201cI was proud at the time and perhaps even prouder now\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Battle of Orgreave is perhaps what is remembered from the strike where police and miners clashed, however, people have different recollections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">John Dunn, a miner who was arrested during the strike, said: \u201cDraconian policing anti-strike and anti-protest legislation is designed to criminalise us and shut us up.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Kitchen also added: \u201cWhen you looked down it was like a scene from a Roman War film, I didn\u2019t notice the police horses at the time.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Kitchen also said: \u201cit was meticulously planned to chase us back.
