The 1867 Group of Sheffield Wednesday fans have set up a fundraiser to support the end of Dejphon Chansiri’s controversial nine year ownership.
The GoFundMe page, which has raised over £2,300, is being used in protests against the Thai owner, who has previously claimed in a club statement that he will put no more additional money into the club.
Ahead of the fixture against Plymouth last Tuesday, a promo-van funded by the 1867 Group listed the controversies of Chansiri’s nine year ownership, including the slogan ‘Back the team, not the regime’.
A fan of Wednesday, who wished to remain anonymous due to the club’s volatile state, said: “His ego is ruining our club, the branding of his name around the ground (Hillsborough), and the pointless changing of our badge is ruining the history of our club”
“The increase in ticket prices is a joke, it’s outpricing loyal fans who turn out to watch their team every week.”
Regarding the failure from Chansiri to sell the club, another anonymous fan said “I think it shows stubbornness to not sell the club even with the protests, and to lie that if the fans wanted him to go, he would – it’s false promise after false promise really.”
The group held further protests at the 2-0 loss against Leeds United last week, handing out flyers further condemning Chansiri and pleading for him to sell the club.
The Owls have been in fine form as of late, picking up five wins in their last seven in the fight for Championship survival. Despite this, one fan said that despite the good run “the fans shouldn’t let good results distract us from ending the current ownership”.
In a September statement, Chansiri said that he would not be putting anymore money into the club due to ‘insults’, claiming that “some fans need to have more respect for owners of clubs and not be so selfish, thinking of their own benefit without doing anything good to the club”
“If anyone wants to buy the club, they should act professionally and follow the correct process.
“All the information required is published in the accounts every year, there is nothing to hide.”
Wednesday currently sit 23rd in the Championship, with their next fixture being away to promotion-chasing Ipswich Town.
