Sheffield Council announces four year financial strategy for the city
Sheffield Town Hall

Sheffield Council have proposed a new budget of around £543m for 2024/25, as well as ‘four-year Medium Term Financial Strategy’.

The Chief Executive presented a report setting out a final draft of an ambitious four-year Council Plan for Sheffield City Council following public consultation.

As part of the strategy, there is to be introduction of new ‘equivalent’ Band D Council Tax, and an near 5% increase in the overall tax to help fund the budget.

Councillor Tony Downing, who represents the Mosborough ward, said: “This is a balanced albeit challenging budget, and we have all had to make difficult decisions to get to this point”

“We know residents are suffering because of the cost of living crisis, and this is also bringing incredible pressures on council budgets and local services.”

The council’s plan sets out a mission statement for the organisation – ‘together we get things done’ – and five strategic outcomes for the organisation

The committee had considered various alternatives to the plan, such as a one year short-term Corporate Delivery Plan, which was rejected in order to add a longer term focus to the council’s ambitions and goals .

Sheffield Council have also made a pledge to continue the transition to a net zero economy, whilst still ‘protecting our local environment”

Walkley councillor Tom Hunt said: “We are only in this position because we have managed our budget prudently and responsibly. And there can be no let-up”.
