Race across the world stars come to Sheffield to share their experiences on hit TV show

Stars of the show Race Across the World, Brian and Melvyn Mole, have given an inside view of their experiences on the hit TV show during an event at Crookes Social Club in Sheffield.

The event ‘An evening with Brian and Melvyn’, hosted by Sheffield Rotary Club, raised money for various charities, with its proceeds going to causes such as Sheffield Hospitals Charity, the Roundabout Charity and other Rotary Charities.

The brothers shared how their experiences on the show shaped their relationship.

Melvyn Mole, 65, a driving instructor from Middlesbrough, said: “There’s no point in just going on to race, and they won’t let you do that.”

The brothers shared very different childhood experiences, one of them having a boarding school education, whilst the other attended a local state school.

They were selected from more than 247,000 other people who applied for the show, they credit this to the relaxed and genuine approach they took to the application process.

They shared how going on the show has brought them closer, saying that they now talk at least once a day, rather than once a month as they did before going on the show.

The evening revealed the truths behind the TV programme, exposing the lesser-known facts of the show.

Melvyn Mole shared that: “We are not given any help,

“If we go the wrong way, the camera crew will follow us going the wrong way.”

He shared some limitations that having a large camera crew posed on their travels, saying that: “If there’s only two tickets left, you can’t take the last two tickets.”

Even though they praised the unscripted nature of the show, the brothers said they were still very aware of the camera crew around them.

Brian Mole, 62, a retired financial advisor, said: “They kept reminding us that it’s a TV programme”

He said: “If you see a very large film crew, then you’re in the right place”

Brian Mole shared how one of his favourite memories was when “Melvyn’s shoes went in the fridge” to disguise the smell.

He said: “The crew were delighted”.

Both brothers encouraged the audience that they too should go on the show, saying that: “It’s about the experiences, not just the race.”
