Sheffield is gearing up for its annual half marathon

The largest event of its kind in South Yorkshire is returning at the end of the month with thousands running for charity.

At 09:30am on Sunday 29th March, thousands of runners will take to the streets of Sheffield to compete in the annual Sheffield Half Marathon to raise money for numerous charities.

The race begins in Arundel Gate before heading up the Ecclesall Road to Ringinglow, through Dore and back down the Ecclesall Road to finish outside the Millennium Gallery.

The race offers a unique ‘triple test’ giving runners the chance to win the Peaks Challenge by completing a timed hill climb, triumph in a timed 10K downhill sprint and cross the finish line first.

Many roads throughout the city will be closed on the day as thousands of runners and thousands of spectators are expected to attend the event.

Sheffield Hallam University will be providing a massage service on the day.

Molly Davies, a 23 year old student, will be running the half marathon to raise money for the Weston Park Cancer Charity:

“My gran was treated at Weston Park Cancer Hospital in 2008, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and they took really good care of her so I just thought it would be a nice full circle moment.”

Miss Davies said it has been ‘fairly difficult’ to balance university, marathon training and rugby but has created a good schedule consisting of different distance runs, gym days and rest days in between rugby and study.

She has also been incorporating a good bit of elevation into her runs in preparation for the half marathon that involves a peak of 340m.

“I’m feeling fairly prepared for it and I did a 15K shorter version of the loop for the half marathon so I could get a taste of how the elevation is going to be […] so I can know how to preserve my energy.”

This is Miss Davies’ first time running a half marathon, only having run a maximum of 7km before but she wanted to push herself and so booked the Sheffield Half Marathon.

Her mum and some teammates will hopefully come down on the day to support her.
