City centre roadworks ‘ruining’ Sheffield green spaces

Roadworks surrounding Sheffield Town Hall and Peace Gardens have been described as ‘unnecessary’ by locals.

The road improvements are taking place between the top of the Moor and Fargate and have now expanded along Pinstone Street causing the road to be filled with barriers and noise.

Michael Hanson, 73, said: “It is going to make improvements, but people do not come to town often anyway and now you have to walk.”

He went on to say the improvements were “unnecessary”.

Some of the work is due to finish on 30 June, but some Sheffielders believe it will take much longer.

Diane Cook, 75, said: “It does need to be done, they wouldn’t be doing it otherwise. It was in a mess before, and what they’re doing, it’ll take years. It won’t be in our lifetime when it will finish, but it will be wonderful when it’s done.

“It has been going on for a long time, but it’s not affecting our way round as we are used to it now.”

The changes are part of the Connecting Sheffield: City Centre Project, which aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment.

The plans are part of a bigger initiative to enhance public transport and pedestrian routes in the city centre.

Sheffield City Council’s website said: “We are still working to improve the city centre on Pinstone Street, Arundel Gate, Charles Street and Surrey Street.

“Between Tuesday 21 April and 1 September 2026, we need to temporarily close a section of Pinstone Street and a section of Charles Street to vehicles.

“This is so we can replace the paving and carriageway in these areas to make them more accessible for everyone”.

Kamila Olszewska, 18, said: “I feel very confused and unsure as a new resident in Sheffield to be driving around and come across an unexpected road closure.

“It’s also sad when roadworks ruin such beautiful green spaces.”
