Hillsborough community cleans up Sheffield streets

The Hillsborough community has been helping clean up their streets through litter picks each month.

The S6 community litter pick is organised by the Green Party and takes place on the second Saturday of each month since 2019.

Chris Bragg, a member of the green party in Sheffield, said: “It’s just the sort of thing the party does. Very much getting out and doing things in the community and working for the community.

“Rather than just sitting around saying ‘we think this’ ‘we think that’, we actually like to go out and engage with people, do things and actually try to make a practical difference

Mr Bragg went on to explain that ‘trying to keep on top of it can be quite a struggle out here because the council don’t have much resources to go round’.

The litter picks focus around four locations in Hillsborough: Malin Bridge tram stop, Leppings Lane tram stop, Tesco Express on Dykes Hall Road and Morrisons on Rural Lane.

As well as their usual spots, the team also responds to more specific requests of areas that people have noticed need attention.

The group hopes that cleaning up the streets of Hillsborough will help to discourage people from dropping more litter as they see it is cleaner.

Feedback to the group has been mainly positive and people who see them will often come along and join next time. Some people have even joined the political party after they have seen the group out, helping the area.

Mr Bragg, said: “I think the only sort of negative things we get are some people say you should do it more and you think, well there’s only so much we can do.

“And obviously we might get a little bit of abuse hurled at us. Someone walked past earlier and was screaming out Reform UK.”

When asked how people can help.

Mr Bragg said: “By coming and joining in with us essentially. You know we’ve got plenty of sticks.

“The more the merrier. There’s plenty of Hillsborough that needs tidying up.”
