Independent businesses get a chance to shine at Sheffield Cathedral

Craft and Flea brought together talented, independent makers, designers and producers at the Sheffield Cathedral.

Visitors to the cathedral on Saturday had the chance to shop small and shop local in an authentic twist on the traditional craft market with a huge selection of products at an event organised by Craft and Flea.

Products on offer included illustration, vintage bric-a-brac, plants, jewellery, sustainable products, food, ceramics and candles.

Arya Madhavan has followed sold her spices at a number Craft and Flea markets, describing them as a ‘safe and stable’ source of income

Christopher Cunningham, an event organiser for Craft and Flea said: ”It’s great for the community. Anything you can think of for a craft market, it’s here. There’s always something unique and quirky which is great.

”The selection process for traders ensures everything is hand made by independent sellers, and local vendors are encouraged to attend events being held near to them.”

He added: ”Our first event was in Stoke just after the Pandemic, and we met a lot of vendors who were trying to get back on their feet. A lot of people were trying to make some extra income, and I fell in love with organising these events to help make that happen.”

Mark Thornton opened his creative wood craft stall for the first time on Saturday

The Craft and Flea is not a typical craft fair. The stalls are handpicked based on their high quality, on-trend products. For example, Saturday’s market had local produce, vegan products, vintage collectables & home as well as food and drinks.

Vendor Mark Thornton said: It’s my first time here so I am interested to see what sells and what doesn’t. I’ve been keeping an eye on the other stalls and I’ve been very impressed, clearly some people have been doing this for a long time.”

He added: ”All my crafts are made from unique species of wood, and everything is one of a kind. I’m glad I can showcase them today.”

Emily Seville has been selling her nature inspired crafts with Craft and Flea for a long time, and ‘gets on really well’ with the customers that attend

Eilidh Renfrew, who was a first time visitor to the Craft and Flea on Saturday, said: ”I can’t believe the range of things on offer here. I think they’ve done a really good job at making sure every stall is different and I think there’s something for everyone here. The vendors are really nice too and they are all happy to explain their products which helps too.”
